L'histoire

In the 1860s Camille Pissarro was still finding his way, painting the countryside around Paris just as it was beginning to change. This small canvas gives most of its space to fields and sky, and tucks a modest factory with a single chimney into the landscape almost casually. That quiet placement is the whole point. Pissarro was moving away from the calm, classical view of nature he had been taught, toward something plainer and more honest about the world he actually saw, where a workshop or a mill was starting to appear among the trees. The factory is not dramatic and not threatening. It simply sits there, a small early sign of the industry that would keep spreading across rural France in the decades to come.
