La storia

Frans Hals painted this in Haarlem in 1639, and he left the facts on the canvas. An inscription in the upper corner gives the sitter's age as 62 and the year. She is Maritge Claesdr Vooght, born into a Haarlem brewing family and married to Pieter Olycan, himself a brewer who rose to become a burgomaster of the city. Hals painted the pair as a matching set, husband and wife turned to face each other, and study of the two canvases shows they were cut from the same bolt of cloth. In the 19th century the two were separated. Her portrait stayed and hangs in the Rijksmuseum, while his went to Florida, to the Ringling museum in Sarasota.
