ストーリー

Cezanne's son said this small canvas was meant as a present for the painter's younger sister Marie, who went to mass every day. A caged bird had carried meaning in European painting for centuries, standing for chastity in the Renaissance and, by the 19th century, for something closer to a kept woman. Cezanne had taken the subject up before, in the 1860s, borrowing the arrangement from old Dutch prints. The picture stayed in the family. It was still with his son in Paris in the 1930s, and Albert Barnes bought it from a dealer there in March 1938 for the gallery he had built at Merion, outside Philadelphia. That collection has since moved into the city with every wall rebuilt as Barnes left it, and this one is still on the north wall of Room 14.
