이야기

One afternoon in the summer of 1874 three painters were at work in the same garden at Argenteuil, on the Seine below Paris. Manet was staying just across the river at Gennevilliers and had set up to paint Monet's wife Camille and their small son Jean on the grass. Renoir turned up, borrowed canvas, brushes and paint from Monet, and settled in beside Manet to paint the same two people. Monet, for his part, painted Manet at the easel. This is Renoir's version, mother and boy resting on the lawn; Manet's is in New York, at the Metropolitan Museum. Monet said long afterwards that while they were all working Manet leaned across to him and said that Renoir had no talent and should be advised to give up painting.
