이야기

The LaM, in a sculpture park just outside Lille in northern France, is unusual in bringing three kinds of art together under one roof, and its name says so: modern art, contemporary art and art brut, the raw art of self-taught and outsider makers.

The modern half came from one collector's eye. Roger Dutilleul was among the first Frenchmen to buy Cubism and a devoted patron of Modigliani, and his heir Jean Masurel gave more than 200 works, Picasso, Braque, Léger and Modigliani among them, to found the museum, which opened in 1983. In 1999 it took in the L'Aracine collection of art brut, the largest of its kind in France, made by people outside the art world entirely.

The low brick building sits among trees and outdoor sculpture, part gallery and part park.
