Die Geschichte
In the spring of 1914 Kandinsky was at work on four tall panels for the round entrance hall of an apartment at 635 Park Avenue in New York, a room he had never seen and was painting to measurements. The commission came through Arthur Jerome Eddy, a Chicago lawyer who bought his work and talked his friend Edwin Campbell, one of the founders of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company, into ordering them.
He finished them, and in August Germany went to war with Russia. As a Russian in Munich he had to get out within days, and he went first to Switzerland and then to Moscow. The panels stayed behind in Europe. They were shown in Stockholm in February 1916, shipped across that summer, and hung in Campbell's hall in the autumn, five years before he gave up the apartment.
