Manner of Cornelis Dusart
The story
Manner of, on a Rijksmuseum label, is the loosest link to a known painter. It says that a picture imitates his style without claiming it came from his hand or his workshop. The painter here is Cornelis Dusart, who worked in Haarlem until his death in 1704 and painted fairs, taverns and village crowds.
Works under this heading include two tiny paintings on copper, each less than 13 centimetres wide, made around 1700. They hang as a pair in the nursery of Petronella Oortman's dolls' house, a quack selling his cures and a woman selling her wares at a door. The museum's own guide to the dolls' house calls them real works by Dusart, while its catalogue places them only in his manner. Nothing is known of the painter's name.
