The Quack, from the Dolls' House of Petronella Oortman
Details
The story
Quacks were a fixture of Dutch fairs and markets, travelling sellers who drew a crowd with their patter and then sold ointments and cures. In this oval on copper, less than 13 centimetres wide, one of them holds forth at his stall on the left while the onlookers press in. A small boy with a hoop stands at the front, a woman in a red bodice leans towards the counter, and beyond them a market and a church tower fill the background. Its pendant, a woman selling her wares at a door, hangs beside it in the nursery of the dolls' house.
