The Street Seller, from the Dolls' House of Petronella Oortman
Details
The story
In a village street, a seller has brought her goods to a cottage door. She bends forward in a broad hat and a red skirt, face to face with a man who stoops over her basket, while a woman leans out over the lower half of a split door and a boy waits by the step. A barrel stands on the ground, a dog and a few chickens wander about, and at the left rises the long pole of a well sweep, used to lift a bucket from a well. The whole scene fits on a copper oval less than 13 centimetres wide, set in a gilt bronze frame with a ring for hanging.
