A Fishmonger at the Door
Details
The story
A fishmonger has come to the door of a well-off house and holds out his basket to a young woman in a red, fur-trimmed jacket, while a little girl in blue beside her plays with the dog. Ochtervelt, who worked in Rotterdam, signed the doorframe at the top right and dated it 1663. He painted on canvas, which was later laid down on a panel.
In the 18th century the picture belonged to Simon Stinstra in Harlingen, a port town in Friesland, and it was bought for the Mauritshuis in 1826. The Mauritshuis still owns it, and since 2010 it has hung in the Gallery Prince Willem V.
