The story
When Maleas worked at Delphi in 1922, the great French excavation had been finished for less than 20 years. To reach the sanctuary, the French School had bought out and demolished the village of Kastri, some 400 houses standing directly on the ruins, and resettled the inhabitants on new ground a few hundred metres to the west. Visitors came for what had been uncovered. He faced the other way. This is the Pleistos ravine dropping away below the site, the olive plain that runs on down to the bay at Itea, and the coast of the Peloponnese across the gulf, laid in flat bands of grey, pink and dark green with almost no shadow in them. The one human mark is the road, a thin white line winding down the valley toward the sea.
