The story

On the right-hand side of the stone plinth, below the flowers, Abraham Mignon painted an orange. The Mauritshuis reads it as a clear reference to the House of Orange-Nassau, the family of the Dutch stadholders, who owned the picture. In their circle the fruit that shared their name was a familiar badge of loyalty.

Mignon made the canvas around 1670 as one of a pair with another flower piece, now also in the Mauritshuis, and both measure 90 by 72.5 centimetres. His signature, AB Mignon fec., short for fecit, made it, sits at the left under the edge of the niche.
