The story

This canvas came down through the House of Orange with two flower pieces by Abraham Mignon that now hang in the main building of the Mauritshuis, a few minutes' walk away. All three passed by inheritance to Prince William V. This one hangs in the gallery he opened in 1774, the Gallery Prince Willem V, and like everything in the room it belongs to the Mauritshuis.

The walls there are hung in the 18th-century way, frame beside frame from the skirting to the ceiling, arranged symmetrically with no gap left empty. Mignon gave this picture no date. He signed it on a stone at the lower left, AB. Mignon: fec.
