The story

Johannes Lingelbach signed this hay harvest at the lower left, I. Lingelbach, but left no date on it, and the Mauritshuis gives none.

The picture can be traced through Dutch collections from the 18th century, from the Amsterdam collector Justus Oosterdijk and his widow to Gerrit van der Pot van Groeneveld in Rotterdam. At the Van der Pot sale in 1808 it was bought for the national museum, which King Louis Napoleon had moved to Amsterdam that same year and which is now the Rijksmuseum. In 1825 it came to the Mauritshuis in an exchange between the two museums. It was later lent to the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage, which kept it until August 2013, and it now hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V as property of the Mauritshuis.
