Italian Landscape with Resting Peasants
Details
The story
Johannes Lingelbach painted this Italian scene of peasants at rest in Amsterdam around 1655 to 1660, a few years after he came home from Rome. He worked on canvas, which was later mounted on a panel, and signed it at the lower right.
In the 18th century the picture belonged to Willem Lormier, a Hague collector, until his paintings were sold in 1763. It then went to Copenhagen, into the collection of Count Adam Gottlob Moltke, a leading courtier of King Frederick V of Denmark, and stayed with his heirs until 1931. The Mauritshuis bought it from a Hague dealer in 1962, so it returned to the city where Lormier had owned it two centuries before. It hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V and belongs to the Mauritshuis.
