The story

In July 1631 the preacher Johannes Wtenbogaert, then 74, came to Delft to visit a sick burgomaster, and while he was there he sat for Michiel van Mierevelt. His diary notes that the painter had asked for the sitting, and asked earnestly.

Wtenbogaert led the Remonstrants, the wing of the Dutch Reformed Church condemned at the Synod of Dort in 1619. He had been a court preacher to Prince Maurits, and after that defeat he spent years in exile, returning to The Hague only in 1626, once Maurits was dead. Mierevelt's original still belongs to the Remonstrant congregation in Rotterdam. This panel is a copy after it by an unknown hand, bought in 1803 for the Dutch national art gallery. It hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V, in the same gallery as a copy of Maurits's portrait, and belongs to the Mauritshuis.
