Portrait of Stadholder Maurits (1567-1625), Prince of Orange
Details
The story
Maurits of Nassau led the army of the Dutch Republic from the late 1580s, yet he became Prince of Orange only in 1618, when his elder half-brother Philip William died. He held the title for seven years, until his own death in 1625. He never married, and it passed to his younger half-brother Frederick Henry.
This large canvas shows him in armour with a commander's baton. It repeats a portrait type by Michiel van Mierevelt, and the copyist is unknown. It arrived as an anonymous gift in 1819. The picture hangs in the Gallery Prince Willem V and belongs to the Mauritshuis, which takes its name from a different Maurits, his younger kinsman Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen, who had the house built between 1636 and 1641.
