The story
No firm date sits on this self-portrait, which suits a face that survives largely because of where it ended up. The Uffizi's collection of painters portraying themselves was assembled by Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici, a Florentine prince who spent the 1660s buying up such likenesses by artists' own hands. Furini, who died in 1646, belonged to exactly the generation of Florentine masters Leopoldo wanted on his walls. So he looks out at us from within a gathering of his peers, each one caught in the act of studying their own reflection.
