Three Peasant Women with Trees
Details
The story
Three countrywomen among trees, painted on a wooden panel more than twice as tall as it is wide, 73 centimetres by 34. What identifies the picture is a small thing the museum's own record describes, a slender sapling that half covers the little peasant girl on the right, the one standing with her back turned. Banti spent his last decades at Montemurlo, in the hills near Prato, and from the 1870s the women who worked the land around it are very nearly his only subject. The Gallerie degli Uffizi date this one loosely, somewhere between 1875 and 1890, and do not narrow it further. It is often listed elsewhere as a canvas. Their record gives it as oil on wood.
