La storia

Veronese made his name on vast, crowded banquet scenes, but this is a quieter thing, meant for private devotion in a Venetian house around the 1560s. It gathers the holy family with the young John the Baptist while Saint Catherine, dressed like a Venetian noblewoman, leans in toward the child. The tenderness has a shadow built into it. Look at the carved frame, where little cupid-angels carry the instruments of the Passion, the nails and the cross, quiet reminders of how this baby's story ends. The picture stayed in Venice with the Widmann family until 1654, when the Medici bought it for Florence, where it hangs today.
