Charlottenburg began in the 1690s as a summer house for Sophie Charlotte, the clever, music-loving wife of the man who would soon crown himself the first king in Prussia. She died young, and her grieving husband named the palace and its district after her. Over the next century it grew into the largest royal residence in Berlin.
Frederick the Great added a rococo wing of his own, and his taste still shows on the walls. His two great Watteaus hang here, the dreamlike Embarkation for Cythera and the Shop Sign of Gersaint, painted as a real signboard for a Paris art dealer. Nearby glitters the Porcelain Cabinet, a small room lined floor to ceiling with hundreds of pieces of Chinese and Japanese china. Much of what a visitor sees was rebuilt after the war, when bombing gutted the palace and craftsmen slowly put the interiors back together.
