The building most people photograph in Zwolle is a sober 19th-century Palace of Justice with a giant tiled ellipse balanced on its roof, an exhibition space added in 2013 by the architect Hubert-Jan Henket that locals call the Cloud, or, less politely, the egg.
Inside is the collection of Dirk Hannema, one of the most gifted and most reckless museum men the Netherlands produced. As director of the Boijmans in Rotterdam he bought boldly, and in 1937 he acquired a Supper at Emmaus as a newly discovered early Vermeer, to wide acclaim. It later proved to be the work of the forger Han van Meegeren, and Hannema's reputation never fully recovered.
His own pictures came to Zwolle, and they range far: old masters like Vroom and Weenix beside Mondrian, Turner and a Picabia, hung across the old courthouse and the glowing ellipse above it.
