Pissarro painted this looking out over his own meadow at Eragny, the village northwest of Paris where he had settled in 1884. For most of his life he had not owned the land he painted; he rented, moved often, and struggled for money well into his fifties. In 1892 he finally bought the Eragny house with a loan from his friend Monet, and the fields around it became a subject he came back to through the seasons and the hours of the day. This is one of the dusk versions from 1894, the low sun setting behind the trees at the far edge while the near grass slides into shadow. He was in his sixties now and worked much of the year from an upstairs window, his eyes no longer up to long days in the open.
