이야기
In 1914 Modigliani sold this study to the man in it. Frank Burty Haviland came from the Limoges porcelain family and was a grandson of Philippe Burty, the critic who coined the word japonisme. He painted, he was buying Picassos by 1909, and he was one of the earlier collectors of African sculpture in Paris. Around 1910 he took over an old monastery at Ceret in the Pyrenees, and for a few summers before the war Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris worked there. The finished portrait that came out of these sittings is in Venice now, part of the Mattioli collection on long-term loan to the Peggy Guggenheim. Haviland kept this study until 1926, when it went through a Paris saleroom, and by 1927 it had been given to the county museum in Los Angeles, seven years after Modigliani died.
