이야기
Signac had been living mostly in Saint-Tropez since 1892, and at the end of the 1890s he came back north to Samois, on the Seine below Fontainebleau, and made a small group of studies on cardboard of the river and the houses along its bank, one in the cool light of morning, others at midday and at dusk. This is one of them, about 27 by 35 centimetres. How it reached Munich is a story about a museum director. Hugo von Tschudi ran the Nationalgalerie in Berlin and bought modern French painting for it, which set him against Kaiser Wilhelm II, and in 1909 he left for Bavaria to run the state collections in Munich. He died two years later with purchases agreed and not paid for. A group of his friends, among them the collectors Eduard Arnhold and Robert von Mendelssohn, put up the money, and in 1912 the pictures entered the Munich collections as what is still called the Tschudi donation.
