История

Thomas Cole came to America as a boy from the mill towns of northern England, and in the 1820s he all but invented American landscape painting — the loose group later called the Hudson River School looked back to him as its founder. He made this in 1828, still in his twenties. He takes the oldest story of exile, Adam and Eve driven out of Eden, and turns it almost entirely into landscape. On one side, through a bright arch of rock, lies the lush green garden. On the other, where the tiny figures flee, the world is all blasted cliffs, a distant volcano, a storm and a wolf standing over its prey. He painted it as a companion to a serene view of the Garden itself, and the two were first shown together in New York that same year, paradise and the ruined world side by side.
