The story

This comes from Van Gogh's year inside the asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provence, where he had committed himself in the spring of 1889 after the breakdown in Arles. On steady days he was let out to paint, first in the walled grounds and then the country just beyond the wall. He worked on this in November 1889, in his last months in the south; his letters that autumn are full of plans to head north again, which he soon did. The small figure in blue on the path is there to give the scale of the trees, whose foliage he laid down the way he did all that year, in short curved dabs of green worked over brown.
