The story

In 1912 Hölzel travelled to Cologne to see the Sonderbund exhibition, more than 650 works by 170 artists, with five whole rooms of Van Gogh and rooms of their own for Cézanne, Gauguin, Picasso and Munch.

The Belvedere dates this piece of cardboard only to around 1912 and gives it no title, and there is no subject to hunt for. A glowing yellow core sits in the middle, pressed in by reds and oranges, with green along one side, deep blue running under the lower edge and a patch of purple in the upper corner. Dark brown strokes loop and bend across it all, some closing into rounded shapes, others simply breaking off. It came to Vienna in 2021 as a permanent loan from the Reinhardt-Schurr collection in Stuttgart, together with a Crucifixion by Hölzel.
