L'histoire

Celia Thaxter's family ran the hotel on Appledore, the largest of the Isles of Shoals, ten miles out from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and by the 1880s the parlour of her cottage beside it was the most literary room on the New England coast. Writers and painters came out by steamer for the summer and stayed for weeks. Her garden was a small fenced plot in front of the cottage, laid on bare granite with the Atlantic wind coming across it, and she raised most of it each year from seed started indoors in spring. Hassam, one of the summer regulars, painted her standing in it in 1892, in white, with the flowers up past her waist. She died two years later, the same year her book about the garden appeared with his watercolours in it.
