이야기
Modigliani painted this in Paris in 1916, in the middle of the war, one of the nudes he worked on over those years. What happened to it afterwards is published by the Emil Buehrle Foundation, which owns it. A Paris doctor, Jacques Soubies, had it until 1940. On 13 December that year, with the city under German occupation, it went through the Hotel Drouot saleroom for 34,000 francs and was bought by the dealers Renou and Colle. Emil Buehrle acquired it in Zurich in November 1951 from the dealer Walter Feilchenfeldt, for 50,000 Swiss francs. Buehrle had made his money manufacturing weapons, and sold them to Germany during the war, so the provenance of everything he bought has been gone over closely since. The chain on this canvas runs unbroken and carries no claim against it. Since 2023 it has hung at the Kunsthaus Zurich, shown together with the research into where it came from.
