이야기
Ingres finished his portrait of the heir to the French throne in April 1842. Three months later, on 13 July, the duke's horses bolted on the road out of Paris at Neuilly. He jumped from the moving carriage, and he died of his head injuries that evening, at 31. Orders for copies arrived at once, from ministries, town halls and regiments. Ingres handed the work of producing a master version to Auguste Pichon, the ablest pupil in his studio, who delivered it in March 1843, and canvases taken from that model are still spread across French provincial museums. The one at Versailles is signed by Ingres himself and dated 1843. The duke stands in a general's uniform, the red trousers filling the lower half of the picture. The portrait Ingres painted from life in 1842 stayed with the family for more than 160 years before the Louvre bought it.
